The same team that brought the 2006 hit Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction has modified the game's game play engine to bring gamers Prototype, a free-roam action game that puts players in the role of Alex Mercer, a former military man with amnesia and superpowers who seeks to find the origin of his powers and the deadly virus that was either caused by his power or created his powers. The game offers a truly unique experience for gamers as they get to unlock his powers and take the shape of their enemies.

As previously stated, the game is a free-roamer, and given the super powered nature of the protagonist, the player gets to enjoy defying gravity. The game is very similar to Incredible Hulk Ultimate Destruction, however there are many differences. First and foremost is the presence of blood and gore, so it is obviously for the M rated crowd.

Prototype also has the unique gameplay quality of allowing the main character to shape shift and disguise himself as his enemies, and as such he absorbs their memories, and most importantly their skills, in the process. Perhaps the best thing about this game is that it gives the player the feeling that they are an unstoppable force to be reckoned with. You receive a vast number of powers that will leave you constantly thinking of new ways to use them.

However, Prototype is not a game without its flaws. The most immediate problem the game has is simply a weak story. Each mission serves as just another excuse to try new powers, The writers clearly just had an initial concept that could have yielded a fantastic story, but instead focused purely for the game play. On top of that, the ending seems very rushed, almost as though they were tired of writing it and were looking for a quick ending. Another problem is that Prototype, at times, just does not seem to take full advantage of the power of the level of graphics games are capable of these days. However, the charming game play premise and overall feel of freedom can make it worth it.

The game is fun and fast, and features a new game plus feature, which is simply starting the game over from the beginning with all of the abilities that you unlocked beforehand. Prototype is a solid, though imperfect game, that is a must buy for free-roam fans.
