Action genre gaming fans worldwide rejoice! The third installment of the God of War series is here. Officially released on the 10th of March 2010, God of War 3 has been selling like hotcakes on the PlayStation 3 console ever since...
If you played the previous two installments on the PlayStation, this game will be right up your alley. Not a whole lot has changed except the continuation of the story. The action is still seamless with excessive amounts of gore. And to those that love the series, that's not necessarily a bad thing.
You play Kratos, former servant of Ares (Previous god of war) and champion of the gods. Having worked your way up to godhood through unfortunate circumstances, you now continue your quest for revenge.
Revenge is a theme that is the basis of the God of War series as Kratos seeks to inflict sweet death upon those that have wronged him in the past. The fact that most of his betrayers were Olympian gods doesn't seem to faze him in the least.
And so the story continues. Having almost killed Zeus in the previous installment, God of War 3 sees you finishing the task so to speak. Only this time, you've brought allies. You've brought the previously defeated Titans forward in time into the future to aid you in your endeavor.
And that's where the story starts, on the back of a Titan. The game begins with you riding the back of the Titan Gaia, who guided and aided you in the God of War 2 game. From there, you must make your way up Mount Olympus while facing the remaining gods (Hades, Poseiden etc) along the way.
The goal remains the same. You seek the destruction of your father, Zeus. Fans of the series will be happy to know that game play has been improved. The action comes fast and is reasonably difficult on normal mode. Battles are still a joy to be in as you weave your blades of death in every which direction.
No longer limited to Athena's Blades, the Barbarian Hammer and the Spear of Destiny, Kratos now has access to a plethora of weapons and magics that he will eventually pick up along the way. This adds a much needed element to the game as most of the weapons found in God of War 2 were simply lacking in ability save for the Barbarians hammer.
The story is well constructed and grips you right from the start like the previous parts in the series. Many have praised the outstanding battle sequences that Kratos goes through in the game but few have really touched upon the story. As a mortal facing the gods, you can't help but root for the anti-hero as he faces the gods one by one on his way to Zeus
.
The God of War 3 will go down as one of the best action games in the history of the genre. It has all the elements of the previous installments while improving upon them. Some may say that God of War 3 doesn't really offer anything new besides a few more combos, weapons, the story, and graphics.
That is true. But these are the elements that made the series such a huge hit in the first place. Run, don't walk, to your nearest store and buy this epic game if you're a true fan of the action genre. You won't be disappointed.
