With the holiday season approaching more rapidly than most parents would care to admit, Xbox 360 owners have more to look forward to than in years past; gamers are treated to one or two highly anticipated games almost annually around this time of year, but in 2011, an all-star lineup is slated to roll out in time for delivery by Santa and company.
Why can't huge releases happen this frequently every year? From October 2011 to December 2011 many blockbuster titles are scheduled for release including Forza Motorsport 4, Battlefield 3, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, Batman: Arkham City, and Assassin's Creed Revelations. Each of these titles is expected to garner very favorable review scores by industry critics, and all are expected to generate good sales figures; however, with so many high-quality releases in a short window, there will be less money to go around.
Earlier this month, the highly anticipated title Gears of War 3 released. So far, it has been met with virtually universal praise from critics and the gaming community, as most who have played it agree that it is a fitting end to what has been an incredible trilogy. Gears of War 3 again places the player in control of protagonist Marcus Fenix as he attempts to eradicate the locust horde and find his father. Featuring re-imagined competitive multiplayer and several improvements to its flagship Horde mode, Gears of War 3 is an early frontrunner for industry game of the year awards. A huge number of gamers turned out to preorder this title, as the game surpassed Halo 3 as the most preordered game in Xbox 360 history. Despite an earlier release date than most other blockbuster titles--September 20, 2011--Gears of War 3 is expected to factor heavily into the purchasing decisions of holiday shoppers in 2011.
Xbox 360 owners will get a couple of new devices late this year as well. Beginning in early November 2011--an official release date has not been given at this time--a new Bluetooth headset and media remote will be hitting the market, courtesy of Microsoft. According to testers, the Bluetooth is very high quality, and Microsoft has stated that it will be compatible with many other devices including mobile phones. The media remote is essentially a reconfiguration of its predecessor, though the slimmer profile and simplified interface make it ergonomically superior and much more user-friendly.
With many highly anticipated titles and much to look forward to, 2011 is certainly shaping up to be the best holiday season for Xboxers in recent memory. Save your milk money, gamers.
