Crysis 2 is the latest sci-fi FPS to be released by Electronic Arts. Released March 22, 2011, it is the highly-anticipated sequel to the original Crysis title released way back in 07.
The city of New York once again is under siege. This time the havoc takes place in the year 2023, just three years after the events from the original Crysis. With alien infestation having previously caused for the citys evacuation, these problems are compounded with both a new invasion of killer Ceph and the Manhattan virus , a seemingly unstoppable, nasty disease nothing can evade. Martial Law is declared and a team of private soldiers from Crynet Enforcement & Local Logistics (CELL) is tasked by the US Department of Defense to save the city from inevitable destruction.
The player fills the shoes of a soldier codenamed Alcatraz. With the help of a variety of arms and the Nanosuit 2.0, Alcatraz engages in fierce alien-versus-human battles through a myriad of scorched cityscapes--dilapidated office buildings, crushed bridges, and other decimated urban landmarks. The Nanosuit Aliens attack the player from almost every direction but, unlike other more traditional first-person shooters that force you down corridors in old-school Wolfenstein style, Crysis 2 gives the player freedom to move freely throughout the environment. Unfortunately for Alcatraz, it is not only the aliens that want him dead. His rivals want the Nanosuit, a futuristic armour of sorts that allows him to cloak, perform bionic man style high jumps, scan the environment, and even boost his armour levels. With this new version, Alcatraz is able to perform better than his predecessor, Jake Nomad Dunn, did in the original Crysis title. By harvesting resources from killed aliens, Alcatraz can gain various powerup modules for the suit throughout the game. These modules help to increase the suits abilities (stealth, armour, etc.)
All in all, the gaming community has welcomed the new Crysis sequel with open arms, praising it for its strong battle scenes, excellent graphics, and cinematics that compliment rather than detract from gameplay. 1UP.com gave it an A-minus score. Game Informer gave it a 9 out of 10, while IGN and Official Xbox Magazine also awarded it 9 out of ten as well.
Even Crytek, the games makers, boast freely about the games graphics, and rightfully so. It is the first game to be based on the new CryEngine 3, with its primary goal being to claim the original Crysis titles claim to being the benchmark in PC gaming graphics. Most gamers would agree. Crysis 2, just as Crytek stated, is a revolution in gaming, perhaps delivering the best graphics to be seen yet. It manages to display even distant objects with impeccable detail.
The most dissenting views about the game came from The Telegraph, which complained about the game having a poor AI and inferior sound. The Telegraph also opined that it was more linear than the original Crysis and mimicked the Call of Duty titles too much.
Crysis 2 is available on the PlayStation 3, Windows PC, and Xbox 360 gaming platforms.
