Resident Evil 5: Review
The name Resident Evil is synonymous with survival horror. It is said that Resident Evil launched this popular genre to the forefront of the video game industry. In 1996, the first game in this franchise was released for Sony PlayStation and Sega Saturn. The critical and commercial success this game helped it become one of the iconic franchises in video game history. Like Halo, Metal Gear Solid and the Legend of Zelda, Resident Evil is one of the most beloved video game series by fans around the world. The most recent sequel in the series, Resident Evil 5, was released earlier in 2009...
On March 13, 2009, Resident Evil 5 was released in North America and Europe. This game has taken the world by storm. While it was not seen by critics and fans as the revolution that Resident Evil 4 was for the series, it has been called hailed as a great evolution for the franchise many have come to know and love. Currently, it is the best-selling game in the franchise with over 5 million copies sold.
The story behind this game, like other iterations, isn't a finely written masterpiece. It is purely meant to tie together some loose ends, bring together some familiar faces and satisfy the gamer as he or she explores the game's various environments. The game takes place in Africa. You play the part of Chris Redfield and you are joined by Sheva Alomar. The story is your typical terrorists controlling a weapon of mass destruction. Most of us don't play these games for their gripping tales. We like them for their cheesy dialogue and interesting characters. This game is significantly shorter than Resident Evil 4. However, you will have at least 10 solid hours of gameplay to enjoy by yourself or with a friend (co-op).
Graphically, this game is beautiful. It features incredibly realistic lighting and wonderfully detailed characters and locales. You will be awestruck when presented with the task of taking on a massive boss. The graphics help bring these bosses to life and fully immerse you in the non-stop action this game delivers.
The sound in this game is equally good. Whether you are listening to a missile explode upon hitting an enemy or the game's spellbinding score, you'll be impressed with this game's audio. While the soundtrack isn't as epic as previous sequels, it gets the job done. As I mentioned earlier, the voice acting is wonderfully bad. You'll find yourself impersonating Wesker in no time.
The controls are very similar to those found in Resident Evil 4. You can't run and fire your gun at the same time. This is supposed to add to the tension, and it works. The co-op interactions between Chris and Sheva help add more depth to the somewhat antiquated controls.
This game is definitely worth a rental. Since it is short, you can beat it and send it back. It is not even close to being the best in the series, but it is fun. If you must own it, you won't be disappointed.

I like a game with good story, not just good graphics and audio. The fact that the game takes place in Africa is interesting.
