Phantasmat: Review

Many adventure PC games take place in hotels, especially those run-down scary ones like we see in horror movies. Phantasmat is no different, as the whole game plot starts to unravel during your stay at the Drowning Dead Hotel. And yes, that is exactly the name of the hotel and no, I don't think it will really attract many customers with that name.

The game starts with you, the hero, driving a car towards no one knows where. After a brief check of your map, strange images blocked the car's windshield, making the car careen down a cliff. Strange enough, you survived the whole ordeal. But after finding yourself in a strange place with stranger people still, it makes you wonder if surviving is such a lucky break.

The game is a hidden object adventure, which basically means you spend most of your time searching for some stuff and chancing upon key items you can use to interact with hindrances you encounter along the way. But don't let that annoy you, because even if you absolutely hate hidden object, you have a choice to skip all that stressful item-finding by switching game play to match 3.

Yes, you heard that right, the game is either hidden object or match 3, and the best thing about it is that you get to choose your genre. Match 3 objective is to make all eye icons reach the bottom of the board. When eye icons reach the bottom of the board, 1 item from the hidden object list will be automatically found. If you ask me, hidden object is still way better since you get a feel of the actual scene, but I must admit, switching to match 3 enables me to locate automatically the hard to find objects.

The story and game progress is straightforward as you just follow your task list until you move on with the storyline. Most of the time, you can explore non-related areas to your current task, but you won't be finding anything significant yet until the situation actually needs it. This triggers backtracking on previously explored areas too, which is kind of stupid if you think about it, but not that too annoying though as the story is very much engaging, less likely for you to realize you've been running round and round the whole place.
Graphics and sounds are top notch. I loved how the game still makes me feel like my hairs are standing out on end even though I know it's just cartoon. Well, the game really does look like cartoon, but with all that realistic camera effects (loved how the screen wobbles up and down while you walk) and absolutely fantastic voice acting, the developers really made this game as eerie as they aimed it to be. The plot is great too, as I am half-expecting what will surprise me next as new areas are being unlocked.

Phantasmat is definitely a fun linear adventure game. It's like reading a thriller storybook for hours and hours unable to stop as the plot unfolds. It's got a unique twist to it, involving match 3 game play on a hidden object adventure, which will be loved by casual game players who are tired of the usual item-finding tasks. It deserves to be one of the best adventure PC games available today and I must say is worth a chunk of your playing time.
